Towards simulation of force and velocity fluctuations due to turbulence in the relay nozzle jet of an air jet loom

Abstract: This research was aimed at obtaining a first estimation of the effect of turbulent vortices present in the relay nozzle jets of an air jet loom on the weft. To this end a large eddy simulation (LES) model was set up and validated capable of simulating a highly underexpanded jet up to a point sufficiently far from the nozzle exit such that flow features at the weft location could be analyzed. The quality of the LES was evaluated based on several quality criteria as well as by comparing the results with experime… Show more

“…Although unsteady RANS can capture forces such as vortex shedding, turbulent eddies with a length scale in the relay nozzle jet are ignored and the weft is not subjected to these eddies. In order to capture eddies at more scales, Delcour et al 54 developed the LES model for simulating highly under-expanded jets in weft insertion. The LES clearly illustrated the oscillatory behavior of the flow when the yarn presence was not considered.…”

“…Researchers have carried out a large number of numerical and experimental studies on flow field characteristics, injection performance and energy consumption of auxiliary nozzles [3] [5] [13], including the influence of structural parameters of auxiliary nozzles, nozzle shape, nozzle number and flow parameters on flow field characteristics. Relevant scholars have studied the nozzle shape of single-hole nozzle [4], the diameter of single-round hole [1] and its taper value [2], the optimal aspect ratio of rectangular nozzle [12], and the cross-sectional area of nozzle outlet [11].…”

“…6,10,13 – 16 Several authors have dealt with the theoretical investigation of the simulation of a yarn launched by the main nozzle of an air-jet weaving loom. 1719 Another parameter is the unevenness of the yarn diameter, which added another factor that complicates the determination of air drag force on the yarn.…”
