Towards Self-Configuring Policy-Based Management Systems

Abstract: One challenge in the automation of policy-based management (PBM) systems is to bridge the gap between specifying policies and realizing them in the actual implementation of a management system, which makes use of those policies. Systems as well as policies change dynamically. This paper introduces a PBM System Architecture that can automatically map the specified policy elements to be realized and enforced by a management system. The proposed model emphasizes the services, algorithms and mechanisms needed to e… Show more

“…Therefore, configuring different bandwidth for each device on the path of a tunnel may require a lot of cost and overhead. (2) Policy-based control: Policy-based control systems, such as SANE 35 and policy-based network management system, 36,37 use a centralized controller to manage, monitor, and control the network devices. Through dedicated polices and protocols, administrators can configure the reserved bandwidths by submitting management rules and objects without having to operate on each device.…”

“…Although the process of device configuration and reconfiguration can be simplified through the structured interfaces and management templates, there is no separation between data and control planes in both protocols. Therefore, configuring different bandwidth for each device on the path of a tunnel may require a lot of cost and overhead. Policy‐based control : Policy‐based control systems, such as SANE and policy‐based network management system,() use a centralized controller to manage, monitor, and control the network devices. Through dedicated polices and protocols, administrators can configure the reserved bandwidths by submitting management rules and objects without having to operate on each device.…”
