Towards real-time middleware for vehicular ad hoc networks

Abstract: Applications of inter-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside communication that make use of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) will often require reliable communication that provides guaranteed real-time message propagation. This paper describes an event-based middleware, called RT-STEAM. Unlike other event systems, RT-STEAM does not rely on a centralized event broker or look-up service while still supporting event channels providing hard real-time event delivery. RT-STEAM event filtering can be based on subject, con… Show more

“…When transmitting on a shared communication medium, with a possibly unbounded number of participating nodes and various procedures for channel access, timing faults have to be accepted. Executing critical distributed services and achieving the required reliability, safety and timeliness of the communication through portable and wireless devices in harsh environments requires the design of resilient services and networks [1], [2].…”

“…These have been designed to respond to the dynamic nature of the environment they serve as well as fulfilling the need for real-time support for vehicle applications. An example of a middleware that provides real-time communication support is RT-STEAM [23]. RT-STEAM is an event-based middleware that provides guaranteed real-time message propagation for vehicular ad hoc networks.…”
