Towards Real-Time Impulsive RFI Mitigation for Radio Telescopes

Abstract: Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is a growing concern for contemporary radio telescopes. This paper describes techniques for real-time threshold-based detection and filtering of broadband and narrowband RFI for the correlator and beamformer chains of a telescope back-end, with specific applications to the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) estimator is used for robust estimation of dispersion of the received signal in temporal and spectral domains. Results f… Show more

“…We note that RFI has been a steadily worsening problem at the GMRT over the last decade and that online RFI mitigation techniques (e.g. Buch et al 2016) will be critical to deal with this issue. Since the observatory already owns most of the required land for the short-baseline expansion (for baselines 1.7 km; see Section 4.2), land acquisition is unlikely to be a serious problem here.…”

“…Quantitative improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was carried out using the metric shown in [4]. The improvement (dB) is given as 10 log 10 (S U /S F ) where S U and S F are the average mean-to-RMS ratios of the unfiltered and filtered signals respectively.…”

“…RFI excision techniques use a robust statistical estimator to estimate the dispersion of the signal and the filtering thresholds [3], [4]. The signal values outside the threshold are blanked (replaced by zeros) or held at the threshold.…”

“…The RFI mitigation methods are broadly divided in two categories: pre-detection and post-detection strategies. The predetection techniques often use reference signals or relatively simple statistical criteria to identify and mitigate RFI signals in real time (e.g., Baan et al 2004;Buch et al 2016). These techniques are often more suitable for highly impulsive or narrowband RFI.…”
