Towards preparedness for PrEP: PrEP awareness and acceptability among MSM at high risk of HIV transmission who use sociosexual media in four Celtic nations: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland: an online survey

Abstract: Conclusions Low levels of PrEP awareness were reported across these Celtic nations.Only one third of high risk MSM had heard of PrEP but over one half would be willing to take a daily pill to prevent HIV infection. Sociodemographic factors, commercial gay scene proximity, and social network use were unrelated to considering PrEP use. However those reporting most CAI partners were more likely to consider PrEP use.3

“…A recent meta-analysis estimated the acceptability of using PrEP among MSM to be 57.8% globally [ 7 ]. Outside of Asia, research on acceptability of PrEP among MSM has been conducted mostly in the United States of America [ 8 22 ], followed by United Kingdom [ 23 26 ], Australia [ 27 29 ], Brazil [ 30 ], Canada [ 31 33 ], France [ 34 , 35 ], Kenya [ 36 ], Netherlands[ 37 ], Peru [ 38 ], Portugal [ 39 ], Switzerland[ 40 ], and Spain [ 41 ]. Other studies have assessed acceptability of PrEP using surveys that included MSM from multiple countries [ 42 , 43 ].…”

“…However, despite widespread activism from members of GMSM communities, health agencies in various countries have adopted different stances on the licensing and promotion of PrEP (Brisson & Nguyen, 2017). Subsequently, awareness, availability and endorsement of PrEP vary significantly amongst GMSM in different Western countries (Bil et al, 2015;Frankis, Young, Lorimer, Davis, & Flowers, 2016).…”

“…There are also medical concerns around toxicity and resistance if used after HIV infection (McMahon et al, 2014) and economic debates around its cost-effectiveness (Cambiano et al, 2015). Furthermore, in those countries where PrEP is more easily accessible, there appear to be relatively low levels of knowledge and uptake within GMSM communities generally (Dolezal et al, 2015;Frankis et al, 2016) and amongst those GMSM who are concerned about their exposure to HIV as indicated by attendance at HIV testing clinics more specifically (Leonardi, Lee, & Tan, 2011;Rucinski et al, 2013).…”

“…In both studies around half of men questioned would consider PrEP use and reporting condomless anal sex was associated with a higher likelihood of considering PrEP. An on-line study of MSM from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland who reported condomless anal sex with ≥2 men in the last year showed 34.5% of participants were aware of PrEP but 58.5% reported that they would be willing to use PrEP if it were available to them (374).…”
