Towards Novel Multifunctional Pillared Nanostructures: Effective Intercalation of Adamantylamine in Graphene Oxide and Smectite Clays

Abstract: Multifunctional pillared materials are synthesized by the intercalation of cage‐shaped adamantylamine (ADMA) molecules into the interlayer space of graphite oxide (GO) and aluminosilicate clays. The physicochemical and structural properties of these hybrids, determined by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman and X‐ray photoemission (XPS) spectroscopies and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that they can serve as tunable hydrophobic/hydrophilic and stereospecific nanotempl… Show more

“…34 After the self-assembly process with GO, an additional peak appeared at 401.5 eV, which is attributed to the ionic bonds between the protonated amine groups from collagen and the anionic carboxylic groups from GO. 35 This result confirms the electrostatic nature of the bonds between GO sheets and collagen molecules. In order to better understand the nature of the GO and collagen interactions that prompts de formation of the hydrogel, several GO and collagen solutions were prepared at different medium pH values (see Figure 2a-b).…”

“…The thickness of the DODA monolayer can vary depending on the tilting angle that the molecules adopt in the film [51,52] and can reach 25 Å. The thickness of a clay platelet is 9.6 Å [53]. As to the dimensions of POSS, when the flexible side chains take a horizontal orientation, the POSS layer is at least 5 Å thick, [35,54] while it accounts for a thickness of 17-17.6 Å [54] when the side chains take a vertical orientation as indicated in Scheme 2.…”

“…If this graphene is squeezed in right direction, it might partly form multilayer graphene or graphite. Some modified graphene types have wider average interlayer space compared to RGO [23][24][25]. Graphene sheets, with surface modification or functional group, can be squeezed; they can withstand external forces.…”
