Towards mmWave V2X in 5G and Beyond to Support Automated Driving

Abstract: Millimeter wave provides high data rates for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications. This paper motivates millimeter wave to support automated driving and begins by explaining V2X use cases that support automated driving with references to several standardization bodies. The paper gives a classification of existing V2X standards: IEEE802.11p and LTE V2X, along with the status of their commercial deployment. Then, the paper provides a detailed assessment on how millimeter wave V2X enables the use case of co… Show more

“…Moreover, in [117], the authors described the fundamental effect of reflection ratio on acoustic distance measurement (ADM) based on the comparison of two types of ADM. [8] utilized the tensor theory to develop a novel structure for the blind source separation (BSS) technique that can exploit the second-order statistic in terms of the tensor format. Recently, for sensing and monitoring technologies, mmWave is also a key component due to its higher bandwidths and higher potential data rates [222]. [19] presented an active mmWave imaging system using the leakywave focusing antenna to obtain a clearer image of conducting objects.…”

“…One of their key enablers is to explore the wireless communication techniques in higher frequency bands, such as the millimeter-Wave (mmWave) band, where the ultra-wide bandwidth enables ultra-high data-rate and ultra-low latency communications [3] [4]. MmWave communications are also expected to be applied into and deeply transform a variety of wireless applications such as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications and Internet of Things (IoT) [5] [6].…”

“…Among these services, we focused on the cooperative or collective perception which is one of the applications of the safety services to improve the safety of automated driving. Cooperative perception is a technology through which a vehicle can use sensor data obtained from other vehicles or RSUs through wireless communications [ 4 ]. The effect of cooperative perception comes from obtaining the sensor data of other perspectives so that the receiving vehicle can see through blind spots.…”
