Towards Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment of Alternative Passenger Vehicles

Abstract: Sustainable transportation and mobility are key components and central to sustainable development. This research aims to reveal the macro-level social, economic, and environmental impacts of alternative vehicle technologies in the U.S. The studied vehicle technologies are conventional gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid with four different all-electric ranges, and full battery electric vehicles (BEV). In total, 19 macro level sustainability indicators are quantified for a scenario in which electric vehicles are c… Show more

“…Several publications made use of extended multi-regional input-output (MRIO) analyses to determine the sustainability impacts of the US building sector [56,57] and different automotive drive-trains [58]. The initial method was developed by Kucukvar and Tatari [56] who used supply and use tables from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis to model supply relationships between industry sectors and therefore simulate a supply chain.…”

“…Another alternative is full electric vehicles (energy provided by a battery), which have a zero-emission potential when electricity is produced with the use of renewable energy sources [4]. In fact, powering electric vehicles through solar charging stations could reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of these vehicles by up to 34% [5]. Although full electric vehicles have been available since the dawn of motoring, they were not popular.…”

“…Therefore, the socio-economic effects of transportation should be considered seriously since they are highly critical to the quality of people's lives [14]. For instance, "Nuride" [15] is a US-based solution which rewards green trips (carpool, bike, walking, etc.)…”
