Towards improving the utilization of university teaching space

Abstract: Abstract. There is a perception that teaching space in universities is a rather scarce resource. However, some studies have revealed that in many institutions it is actually chronically under-used. Often, rooms are occupied only half the time, and even when in use they are often only half full. This is usually measured by the "utilisation" which is defined as the percentage of available 'seat-hours' that are employed. Within real institutions, studies have shown that this utilisation can often take values as l… Show more

“…What is missing here is the constraint that they have to be as consecutive as possible. -Studies into the utilisation of teaching space at real universities (see Beyrouthy et al 2009) This choice is related to the uncertainty in the number of students that actually take the course, in comparison with the nominal one. A hard constraint would be too strict in our context.…”

“…One such application arises in a number of universities (Burke, Werra, & Kingston, 2004): course timetabling. In educational timetabling, considerable resources can be wasted by low utilisation of teaching space (Beyrouthy et al, 2008). Specific timetabling problems vary widely from institution to institution.…”
