Towards Friendly Mixed Initiative Procedural Content Generation: Three Pillars of Industry

Abstract: While the games industry is moving towards procedural content generation (PCG) with tools available under popular platforms such as Unreal, Unity or Houdini, and video game titles like No Man's Sky and Horizon Zero Dawn taking advantage of PCG, the gap between academia and industry is as wide as it has ever been, in terms of communication and sharing methods. The authors have worked on both sides of this gap and in an effort to shorten it and increase the synergy between the two sectors have identified three d… Show more

“…Whether more advanced methods from ALife, such as CPPNs, will be experimented with by games developers will depend on designers willingness to give up authorial control in exchange for a variety of options. Alternatively, it may be that computational power and algorithmic improvements increase to a point where designers can use these advanced techniques to directly create or tweak their creations without waiting or losing authorial control [LLL20]. One domain that could offer interesting new perspectives is from developmental biology itself.…”

“…Horvitz [20] proposed that these tools should provide efficient means to directly change, undo, or override their results; our "Designer has full control" category captures this insight. This is echoed in recent work from Lai, Latham, and Leymarie [27] ("respect designer control"), and Amershi et al [4] ("Support efficient correction. ").…”

“…Recent work by Lai, Latham, and Leymarie [27] begins to bridge the gap between mixed-initiative PCG tools and practical game design. They propose three "pillars" for mixed-initiative interfaces, based on their practical game design experience: "respect designer control, " "respect the creative process, " and "respect existing work processes. "…”

“…In the molecular arena the most well established gamification projects include FoldIt [29] and EteRNA [30] which respectively consider folding proteins and the assembly of RNA molecules. Crowd-sourced solutions can outperform computer algorithms or be combined with them in hybrid systems such as "mixed initiative systems" [31].…”
