Towards enabling hyper-responsive mobile apps through network edge assistance

Abstract: Abstract-Poor Internet performance currently undermines the efficiency of hyper-responsive mobile apps such as augmented reality clients and online games, which require low-latency access to real-time backend services. While edge-assisted execution, i.e. moving entire services to the edge of an access network, helps eliminate part of the communication overhead involved, this does not scale to the number of users that share an edge infrastructure. This is due to a mismatch between the scarce availability of res… Show more

“…The first problem is partitioning a cloud workload for an edge node. In the context of edge nodes, there is limited research on partitioning servers suitably [35], instead of deploying duplicate servers [36]. The second problem is provisioning edge nodes and facilitating communication between the edge and the cloud servers.…”

“…The follow-me cloud concept [10] proposes an architecture that allows edge services to migrate in unison with the user's movement patterns. To date, research has been done on related challenges, for e.g., mobility-aware online service placement frameworks [12], [13], hybrid edge deployment models for sharing edge infrastructure at scale [14], and platforms for migrating software services across edge servers [15]. However, the challenge of migrating an application's disk state fast enough remains open.…”

“…Geography-aware: Online gaming application such as Pokemon request the services which are normally transferred to a cloud server from user devices. The ENORM framework segregates the game server and utilizes in an edge node instead of transmitting the entire traffic to data centers [113]. Geographically related data to a particular location is then made obtainable in an edge node.…”
