“…Schistosomiasis control programs depend mainly on PZQ as a corner stone through mass drug administration. Although this strategy has had a great impact on curtailing transmission in different countries, the reliance on a single drug for any disease of this magnitude may lead to the development of drug resistant parasites (Abou-El-Naga, 2018). A recent proteomic study revealed that Hsp70 is associated with decreased sensitivity of adult S. mansoni to PZQ (Abou-El-Naga et al ., 2019).…”

“…PZQ is the current drug of choice and the only drug that is approved by the World Health Organization for the treatment of all species of Schistosoma (WHO, 1993; Cioli and Pica-Mattoccia, 2003). It has been used successfully in large-scale schistosomiasis control programs in many multiplicity of countries (Abou-El-Naga, 2018), therefore, the possible emergence of resistance might therefore is considered likely. There are several parasite isolates in the field and lab have shown reduced susceptibility to PZQ (Ismail et al ., 1994; Couto et al ., 2011; Abou-El-Naga et al ., 2019), these possibly being an indication for the emergence of more widespread drug resistance.…”

“…Since the implementation of different control strategies in 1922, schistosomiasis (S. mansoni) prevalence had substantially decreased to 0.2% in 2016 in most of the endemic areas. The first step from this 2016 control stage to elimination included the re-mapping of residual distribution of schistosomiasis in all endemic governorates using both the KK technique and a urine circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) test [26]. So far, 35 districts of 5 governorates have been re-mapped, while the survey of other governorates is still ongoing.…”

“…Schistosomiasis represents a global health concern with over 700 million people at risk of contracting this disease (Weber et al, 2019). In Egypt eradicating this disease is a top governmental priority (Abou-El-Naga, 2018). Generally, chemotherapy is still one of the most effective methods for controlling Schistosoma infection (Bertão et al, 2012a).…”
