Towards Elastic Multi-Tenant Database Replication with Quality of Service

Cloud computing is a trend of technology aimed at providing on-demand services with payment based on usage. Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are applications that require a highly scalable architecture that provides for its users an acceptable level of Quality of Service (QoS). This work aims to show the steps needed to install a VLE in a cloud computing infrastructure. The VLE's migration to this new type of execution environment allows the increase of its use but also brings some performance issues that must be considered. The case study will consider the Moodle VLE which was chosen for its widespread use.

This is an author-deposited version published in : http://oatao.univ-toulouse.fr/ Eprints ID : 18792The contribution was presented at CBDCom 2016 :https://cbdcom2016.sciencesconf.org/ Abstract-In today's world, tenants of cloud systems expect timely responses to queries that process ever-increasing sizes of data. However, most cloud providers offer their services without any performance guarantees to their tenants. In this paper we propose a data replication strategy that aims to satisfy performance guarantees for the tenant while ensuring profitability of the cloud provider. Our strategy estimates the response time of the queries, as well as the expenditures that affect the profitability of the cloud provider. The decision of whether to perform replication is determined by the fulfillment of these two criteria. Validity of the proposed strategy is provided by means of a simulation study.

Many different mechanisms have been developed to implement Distributed Transactional Memory (DTM). Unfortunately, there is no "one-size-fits-all" design that offers the desirable performance across all possible workloads and scales. In fact, the performance of these mechanisms is affected by a number of intertwined factors that make it hard, or even impossible, to statically configure a DTM platform for optimal performance. These observations have motivated the emergence of self-tuning schemes for automatically adapting the algorithms and parameters used by the main building blocks of DTM systems. This chapter surveys existing research in the area of autonomic DTM design, with a focus on the approaches aimed at answering the following two fundamental questions: how many resources (number of nodes, etc.) should a DTM platform be provisioned with, and which protocols should be used to ensure data consistency.
