Towards development of a prototype high-temperature latent heat storage unit as an element of a RES-based energy system (part 2)

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents an experimental study performed with the general aim of defining procedures for calculation and optimization of shell-and-tube latent thermal energy storage unit with metals or metal alloys as PCMs. The experimental study is focused on receiving the exact information about heat transfer between heat transfer fluid (HTF) and phase change material (PCM) during energy accumulation process. Therefore, simple geometry of heat transfer area was selected. Two configurations of shell-and-… Show more

“…Based on previous experiments [ 31 ], three shell and tubes geometries, differing in the tubes diameter, were selected for comparison. It was assumed that: Typical copper tubes will be used to build the LHTES (except external housing); The distance between the tube walls is not less than 5 mm; The PCM is placed inside the pipes (cases 5–7); The PCM is placed outside the pipes (cases 8–10).…”

“…Measurement data from heat and power meters and data acquired by the PLC controller is transmitted to the SCADA HMI system for the visualization and registration of measurement and control data. The SCADA HMI system was developed in the PROMOTIC environment [15], and it also generates control signals which are transmitted to the system by the PLC controller.…”
