Cloud infrastructures are highly favoured as a computing delivery model worldwide, creating a strong societal dependence. It is therefore vital to enhance their resilience, providing persistent service delivery under a variety of conditions. Cloud environments are highly complex and continuously evolving. Additionally, the plethora of use-cases ensures requirements for persistent service delivery vary. As a contribution to knowledge, this work surveys resilience techniques for cloud environments. We apply a novel perspective using a layered model of traditional and emerging cloud paradigms. Works are then classified according to the Resilinets model. For each layer, the most common techniques with limitations are derived including an actor’s strength in influencing resilience in the cloud with each technique. We conclude with some future challenges to the field of resilient cloud computing.

We present the case of monitoring a decentralized and crowdsourced network infrastructure, that needs to be monitored over geographically distributed devices at the network edge. It is a characteristic of the target environment that both, the infrastructure to be monitored and the hosts where the monitoring system runs, change over time, and network partitions may happen. The proposed monitoring system is decentralized, and monitoring servers coordinate their actions through an eventually consistent data storage layer deployed at the network edge. We developed a proof-of-concept implementation, which leverages CRDTbased data types provided by AntidoteDB. Our evaluation focuses on the understanding of the continuously updated mapping of monitoring server to network devices, specifically on the effects of different policies for each individual monitoring server to decide on which and how many network devices to monitor. One of the policies is experimented by means of a deployment on 8 real nodes, leveraging the data replication of Anti-doteDB in a realistic setting. The observed effects of the different policies are interpreted from the point of view of the trade-off between resource consumption and redundancy.

Orchestrating next-gen applications over heterogeneous resources along the Cloud-IoT continuum calls for new strategies and tools to enable scalable and application-specific managements. Inspired by the self-organisation capabilities of bacteria colonies, we propose a declarative, fully decentralised application management solution, targeting pervasive opportunistic Cloud-IoT infrastructures. We present a customisable declarative implementation of the approach and validate its scalability through simulation over motivating scenarios, also considering end-user’s mobility and the possibility to enforce application-specific management policies for different (classes of) applications.
