Towards concurrent planning of railway maintenance and train services

Abstract: Efficiency in the public and freight transportation systems is of crucial importance for a society. Railways can offer high capacity and relatively low environmental impact, but require that several technical systems are tuned and operate well. Specifically there is a very tight interdependency between infrastructure and trains, which distinguishes railways from other transportation modes. Thus maintenance of all the subsystems is needed.Railways do also have some specific and complicating properties that infl… Show more

“…In monetary volumes, the European countries have an average spending for maintenance and renewals of 70,000 EUR per km track and year (EIM-EFRTC-CER Working Group 2012). Statistically, the maintenance spendings are in the order of 40% of the gross value added for the railway sector in Europe, with similar figures found in Sweden (Lidén 2016).…”

“…We use the same categorization as proposed in Lidén (2015Lidén ( , 2016, where three classes of tactical maintenance scheduling problems have been identified: (1) deterioration-based maintenance scheduling, (2) maintenance vehicle routing and team scheduling, and (3) possession scheduling.…”

“…Planning for maintenance can begin several years before it must be carried out. The Network Statement (JNB), published annually by Trafikverket, describes the conditions that exist for running traffic on the tracks during the coming train schedule and forms the basis for the continued planning of track work (Honauer and Ödeen 2017, Lidén 2016, SOU 2015. The JNB includes planned major rail works (PSB), which are activities that have a great impact on traffic and are announced 1.5 years before the timetable is valid.…”

“…The literature overviews in Lidén (2015) and Lidén (2016) reveal an increase in research publications, particularly from year 2005 and onward. The tactical problem types have received most attention (more than half of the publications), and among these more than 1/3 address possession scheduling, which reflects the importance of this problem type.…”

“…The different studies are shown in Figure 2.1, where the horizontal axis shows time order and the vertical axis roughly indicates the level of practical/theoretical content of the corresponding papers. The scope of the licentiate thesis (Lidén, 2016) and this thesis are shown with dotted and dashed boxes respectively.…”
