Towards area‐wide control of Bactrocera invadens: prospects of the sterile insect technique and molecular entomology

Abstract: It is 10 years since the first detection of the invader fruit fly, Bactrocera invadens, in sub-Saharan Africa. The pest continues to hamper fruit production and create barriers to trade. Strategies currently employed to control B. invadens are insufficient, and more effective area-wide strategies are needed. The sterile insect technique and molecular entomology approaches have high potential and could help to bring about effective area-wide control of the pest if adopted and used as components of area-wide int… Show more

“…In response to enormous losses incurred in the horticultural agro-industry, programs aimed at managing fruit damaging Tephritidae have been implemented worldwide, albeit with variable success. Some of the strategies that have been used widely include chemical control [ 11 , 12 ], orchard sanitation [ 13 , 14 ], baiting techniques [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ], sterile insect technique [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ], male annihilation technique [ 18 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], entomopathogenic fungi [ 26 , 27 , 28 ] and use of parasitoids [ 29 , 30 , 31 ] among others.…”

“…Many control strategies have been recommended and used to reduce the population size of this pest in southern Africa, including bait sprays and male annihilation technique, application of bio-pesticides such as Metarhizium anisopliae, fruit bagging, and orchard sanitation (Ekesi & Lux 2006;Manrakhan et al 2012;Ogaugwu 2014). The potential for use of SIT against this pest has also been raised.…”

“…In Senegal, local factors are at play that may shape control programme design: (i) wild mango trees, smallholder farms and export orchards are located side by side, and (ii) huge differences in farmers’ capacity to invest in control measures result in differences in the degree of infestation that undermine individual efforts. Hence, an effective area‐wide pest management strategy is needed (Ogaugwu, 2014).…”
