Towards an understanding of salient neighborhood boundaries: adolescent reports of an easy walking distance and convenient driving distance

Abstract: Numerous studies have examined the association between the surrounding neighborhood environment and physical activity levels in adolescents. Many of these studies use a road network buffer or Euclidean distance buffer around an adolescent's home to represent the appropriate geographic area for study (i.e., neighborhood). However, little empirical research has examined the appropriate buffer size to use when defining this area and there is little consistency across published research as to the buffer size used.… Show more

“…Neighborhoods are often defi ned as being within the boundaries of a 10-to 15-minute walk. This metric is supported by research examining a reasonable walking distance, at least in adolescents, who defi ned an easy walking distance as 15 minutes [39]. The most commonly used defi nition of a neighborhood in US-based neighborhood research is the participant's census tract as defi ned by the US Census Bureau [40].…”

“…Commercial PA facilities around each of the girls' homes were counted within a 0.75-and 2.0-mile street network buffers using GIS. A 0.75-mile buffer was chosen because it represents approximately a 15-min walk and the 2.0-mile a short drive [21].…”

“…Five kilometres may be too large a distance to expect students to travel to access neighbourhood PA resources. Indeed, recent PA research suggests that a buffer of 1 km is considered to be an easy walking distance for adolescents (Colabianchi et al 2007, Trilk et al 2011. Learning more about the associations between student PA and features of the built environment within 1 km of schools may provide important insight for school-based PA interventions targeting adolescents.…”
