Towards an Operational Framework for Designing Training Based Sports Virtual Reality Performance Simulators

Abstract: With the advent of commercially available virtual reality (VR) hardware, immersive experiences can be created to simulate competitive performance environments. Simulators can provide novel ways for fans to engage with otherwise unattainable performance situations. Furthermore, simulators can also have clear advantages for elite athletic training by controlling the perceptual inputs, measuring the kinematic based outputs, measuring how the athlete is interacting with the created environment, and providing concu… Show more

“…In addition, in the convergence field, as a new untact industry field, sports convergence industries such as online-related industries, virtual reality, sports and immersive content technology are being tried. There is a new demand for a platform for improving the performance of elite sports using the un-tact industry, active convergence in the sports industry, and multi-sports with an omni-channel system that combines virtual reality and artificial intelligence [1,2]. Fundamentally, in the field of Kinesiology, innovation is required to construct a new academic paradigm centered on convergence with various disciplines.…”

“…Bideau et al developed a framework combining motion capture camera, real‐time animation engine and immersive HMD to enable the creation of VR simulations for sports performance analysis and improvement in handball and rugby. Generalizing Bideau et al's framework, Shepherd et al created a framework for designing and developing VR sports training simulators. By including adapted criteria in enhancing perpetual fidelity and representing the behaviors, and with a component system, their framework shows the potential of using powerful technology such as VR in athlete training.…”
