Towards an Ontology for Collaboration in System of Systems Context

Abstract: There is considerable number of architectural frameworks and standards with many pertinent definitions of concepts that are often not compatible with each other, hindering collaboration, especially in the context of System of Systems (SoS). To address this issue, we propose an ontology for SoS that uses Object Process Methodology (OPM) ISO 19450 to facilitate collaboration among organizations with focus on safety aspects. The current effort focuses on the foundational extended taxonomy that uses a minimal set … Show more

“…The key function of ontology is to support the representation and management of knowledge. Efforts in developing a computable knowledge base responds to the need "to guide transdisciplinary collaboration across several organizational entities working on the same SoS" [25] and model a domain of knowledge. Ontology Based Systems Engineering (OBSE) focuses on using ontologies to enable the betterment of the SE body of knowledge; a clear roadmap of the usefulness of ontologies and their application in SE has been presented by Yang, Cormican and Yu, [24].…”

“…The approach was applied to a Smart Flood Monitoring SoS. Similarly, authors in (Nilsson et al, 2020) specified an architectural framework based on an ontology that uses the Object Process Methodology (OPM) ISO 19450. They model SoS-related concepts and relations along them to streamline collaboration among involved SoS stakeholders.…”

“…Modeling languages enable describing the requirements and design of systems in a formal yet understandable way. Increasingly, the paradigms of Internet of Things (IoT) [1][2][3][4], Industry 4.0, [5] System of Systems [6,7], and Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) [8,9] are gaining momentum. In these systems, software modules are embedded in the hardware components, control them, and communicate their status in near real-time via the Internet, relieving humans from mundane operations and serving their personalized needs accurately and more efficiently.…”
