Towards an Interdisciplinary Conceptualization of Trust: A Typological Approach

Abstract: Adopting a diversity‐in‐unity perspective that identifies all shared dimensions and typical delineations, both as structure‐similar yet content‐diverse configurations, this paper proposes an interdisciplinary conceptualization of trust with primary trust ideal‐types. This conceptualization contains three components: (i) a typology of four trust dimensions related to trust conditions and trust functions; (ii) a typology of four trust delineations derived from the four trust dimensions; and (iii) a typology of f… Show more

“…As there is no generally accepted concept of trust (Korsgaard et al 2014;Li 2007;Ring 2003), the present work relies on the well-established model suggested by Mayer et al (1995), who define trust as ''the willingness of a party to be vulnerable to the actions of another party based on the expectation that the other will perform a particular action important to the trustor, irrespective of the ability to monitor or control that other party '' (ibid, p. 712). Trust is based on the personal predisposition to trust and on three trustworthiness factors: ability, benevolence and integrity (Mayer et al 1995).…”

“…Data analysis was conducted using LISREL (Jöreskog & Sorbom, 1993) and MPlus (Muthén & Muthén, 1998-2007). Before hypotheses were tested the measurement model was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and measurement invariance (MEI) testing.…”

“…As stated earlier, future research should pursue the Bcross-indigenization geocentric approach^by developing more geocentric theories (e.g., Jukka, Blomqvist, Li, & Gan, 2016;Li, 2007aLi, , b, 2008Li, , 2016. However, we must remind everyone that the Bindigenization-from-within approach^is still necessary to develop relevant indigenous theories before we can effectively engage in Bcross-indigenization geocentric approach^to developing geocentric theories (e.g., Li, 2006Li, , 2014Lin et al, 2015).…”
