Towards an explicit model of large field inflation

Abstract: Abstract:The unwinding inflation mechanism is studied in a type IIB flux compactification where all moduli are stabilized using flux, non-perturbative effects, and the leading α corrections of the large volume scenario. We consider the backreaction on the geometry due to the presence of anti-D3 branes as well as the backreaction of inflation on the Kähler moduli, and compute the resulting corrections to the slow-roll potential. By taking large flux numbers, we are able to find inflationary epochs where backrea… Show more

“…Our results clearly suggest that it is inconsistent to rely on just the scalar mode ψ for the effective dynamics on the S 2 and one should include (a subset of) a Kaluza-Klein tower of states. As a result one would expect the results reported in [63,64] to be affected. We note that an inflationary model that is described from the perspective of scalar matrix degrees of freedom, albeit in a different context, already has been studied in [65].…”

“…In other words, the additional degrees of freedom related to the S 2 only decouple at the poles and should in general be included in the four-dimensional effective theory. This should impact models derived from KPV's effective potential, such as the inflationary model recently considered in [63,64], where the effective potential (3) was used for large field inflation in the regime p/M 1. Our results clearly suggest that it is inconsistent to rely on just the scalar mode ψ for the effective dynamics on the S 2 and one should include (a subset of) a Kaluza-Klein tower of states.…”

“…This regime is the one typical of the unwinding mechanism studied by [20,21] and can be achieved in a probe regime. It corresponds to the periodic motion of the NS5-brane from the south-pole to the north-pole of the S 3 and vice versa.…”

“…Moduli stabilisation scenarios with long warped throats are not only useful in the study of dS vacua. As pointed out in [20,21], such set-ups can incorporate models of axion monodromy with large (in principle transplanckian) field ranges (see also [22][23][24][25] These have potential implications for phenomenology, in particular for the construction of models of large field inflation. More importantly, they represents an explicit framework where conceptual issues associated to transplanckian field displacements can be analysed in detail.…”
