Prediction systems present some challenges on two fronts: the relation between video quality and observed session features and on the other hand, dynamics changes on the video quality. Software Defined Networks (SDN) is a new concept of network architecture that provides the separation of control plane (controller) and data plane (switches) in network devices. Due to the existence of the southbound interface, it is possible to deploy monitoring tools to obtain the network status and retrieve a statistics collection. Therefore, achieving the most accurate statistics depends on a strategy of monitoring and information requests of network devices. In this paper, we propose an enhanced algorithm for requesting statistics to measure the traffic flow in SDN networks. Such an algorithm is based on grouping network switches in clusters focusing on their number of ports to apply different monitoring techniques. Such grouping occurs by avoiding monitoring queries in network switches with common characteristics and then, by omitting redundant information. In this way, the present proposal decreases the number of monitoring queries to switches, improving the network traffic and preventing the switching overload. We have tested our optimization in a video streaming simulation using different types of videos. The experiments and comparison with traditional monitoring techniques demonstrate the feasibility of our proposal maintaining similar values decreasing the number of queries to the switches.

How Much to Coordinate? Optimizing In-Network Caching in Content-Centric Networks

In content-centric networks, it is challenging how to optimally provision in-network storage to cache contents, so as to balance the trade-offs between the network performance and the provisioning cost. To address this problem, we first propose a holistic model for intra-domain networks to characterize the network performance of routing contents to clients and the network cost incurred by globally coordinating the in-network storage capability. We then derive the optimal strategy for provisioning the storage capability that optimizes the overall network performance and cost, and analyze the performance gains via numerical evaluations on real network topologies. Our results reveal interesting phenomena; for instance, different ranges of the Zipf exponent can lead to opposite optimal strategies, and the trade-offs between the network performance and the provisioning cost have great impacts on the stability of the optimal strategy. We also demonstrate that the optimal strategy can achieve significant gain on both the load reduction at origin servers and the improvement on the routing performance. Moreover, given an optimal coordination level * , we design a routing aware content placement (RACP) algorithm that runs on a centralized server. The algorithm computes and assigns contents to each CCN router to store, which can minimize the overall routing cost, e.g., transmission delay or hop counts, to deliver contents to clients. By conducting extensive simulations using a large scale trace dataset collected from a commercial 3G network in China, our results demonstrate that our caching scheme can achieve 4% to 22% latency reduction on average over the state-of-the-art caching mechanisms.Index Terms-in-network caching, content-centric networks, coordinated caching An earlier version of this work appeared in the Proceedings of IEEE ICDCS [1], June 2013. As the size of networks continues to increase, the scalability of the centralized controller becomes increasingly issues in Software Defined Networking. Distributed controllers have been proposed to solve the problem that the centralized controllers such as NOX and Floodlight suffer from. That logically centralized, but physically distributed architecture divide the network into zones with separate multiple controllers to achieve a better scalability control plane. However, Such distributed architecture introduces a new challenge to the load rebalancing of controllers when uneven load distribution among the controllers due to the statically configured mapping between a switch and a controller. Therefore, under variable traffic conditions in real networks, keeping load balance dynamically among the controller clusters is essential for realizing a high performance and scalability control plane. To address these issues, we propose a dynamic load rebalancing method based on switch migration mechanism for clustered controllers. The multiple controllers use JGroups to coordinate actions for switch migration. The whole network is divided into several groups and each group is set up one controller cluster. Our proposed method can dynamically shift the load across the multiple controllers through switch migration. The mechanism support controller failover without switch disconnection avoiding the single point of failure problem. We also implemented a prototype system based on OpenDaylight Hydrogen controller to evaluated the performance of our design. Our preliminary result shows that the method enables controllers to relieve the overload via switch migration and can improve throughput and reduce the response time of the control plane.
