Towards an adiposity-related disease framework for the diagnosis and management of obesities

Abstract: Obesity is a complex disease that relapses frequently and associates with multiple complications that comprise a worldwide health priority because of its rising prevalence and association with numerous complications, including metabolic disorders, mechanic pathologies, and cancer, among others. Noteworthy, excess adiposity is accompanied by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and subsequent organ dysfunction. “…Several scientific societies are currently working on developing new working frameworks to better capture the reality of excess weight and its appropriate management. 5,[20][21][22][23] On the one hand, the simplicity of the measurement of weight, height, waist, hip and combinations to derive anthropometric indices makes it useful in clinical as well epidemiological settings. On the other hand, being a mere surrogate of adiposity the right balance between usefulness and meaningfulness needs to be struck.…”

“…Moreover, epidemiological forecasts from the United States suggest that obesity prevalence in the adult demographic is poised to reach 49% by 2030 [2]. Concurrently, there is a marked annual rise in the incidence of obesity-associated comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and cardiovascular diseases [3].…”
