The small Mesozoic myrmeleontoid family Babin-skaiidae comprises 13 described species in nine genera known from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil, the Baissa locality of Russian Siberia, and mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber (Lu et al., 2017; Makarkin et al., 2017; Hu et al., 2018; Huang et al., 2019; Makarkin & Staniczek, 2019; Ngô-Muller et al., 2020). Makarkin et al. (2017) made an extensive revision of these small antlions, and pointed out their morphological proximity with the Nymphidae. However, they could not revise Neliana impolluta Martins-Neto, 1997, whose holotype is a poorly preserved specimen. Thus even the generic attribution of this species remained uncertain.

Examination of new fossil specimens of Prosyntexis from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil reveled a new species namely Prosyntexis sennlaubi sp. nov. To ensure the validity of the new taxon we examined previously described and figured specimens but we also figured an additional specimen of Prosyntexis gouleti Sharkey, 1990. The new species can be differentiated from the other Prosyntexis species of the Crato formation by its larger size but also in having the cell 2R1 small, the cell 2M small and short, the cell 3R1 narrow and the vein a directed toward wing apex. We performed a Geometric Morphometric Analysis (GMA) to estimate the variation in the forewing venation of the two species from the Crato Formation and ensure our placement.

Placoderms, the most basal jawed vertebrates, are crucial to understanding how the characters of crown gnathostomes comprising Chondrichthyes and Osteichthyes evolved from their stem relatives. Despite the growing knowledge on the anatomy and diversity of placoderms over the past decade, the dermal scales of placoderms are predominantly known from isolated material, either morphologically or histologically, resulting in their squamation being poorly understood. Here we provide a comprehensive description of the squamation and scale morphology of a primitive taxon of Antiarcha (a clade at the root of jawed vertebrates), Parayunnanolepis xitunensis, based on the virtual restoration of an articulated specimen by using X-ray computed tomography. Thirteen morphotypes of scales are classified to exhibit how the morphology changes with their position on the body in primitive antiarchs, based on which nine areas of the post-thoracic body are distinguished to show their scale variations in the dorsal, flank, ventral, and caudal lobe regions. In this study, the histological structure of yunnanolepidoid scales was described for the first time based on disarticulated scales from the type locality and horizon of P. xitunensis, demonstrating that yunnanolepidoid scales are remarkably different from the dermal plates of antiarchs including yunnanolepidoids in the absence of developed middle layer. Together, our study reveals that the high regionalization of squamation and the bipartite histological structure of scale might be plesiomorphic for antiarchs, and jawed vertebrates in general.
