Accidents are the main hurdles for using bicycles to change our transport habits. After many studies, there is no generally adopted solution. Two (non exclusive) approaches can be applied: one is based on the direct detection among vehicles, usually requiring additional hardware. The other consists of communicating through an external server which sends alerts to the concerned vehicles in real-time. In the latter case, if smartphones are used as the only instrumentation, the adoption of the system could be straightforward. In a previous work we validated the usage of conventional smartphones to create the client-side of a warning system. Instead, in the current work we address the server part. Such a server has to meet several requirements, such as being scalable (a matter not previously addressed), and able to meet real-time constraints. To achieve our purpose, we first provide the algorithms needed to ensure scalability. The system is composed by a dynamic pool of region servers, which controls a defined geographic area. Then, we implemented a functional prototype of such servers; its performance has been tested under realistic conditions to find the saturation point, after which real-time constraints are no longer guaranteed. Finally, the saturation point has been tested along with different traffic densities. Results show that the region server is able to track up to 15,000 simultaneous users, while the best we have found in published results are less than 1,400 users in simulated scenarios.

Service-dominant logic has moved users from consumers to valued co-creators in transactional ecosystems. In service-dominant logic, privacy and trust are private resources. This logic is a metaperspective that needs to be integrated with mid-range theories to investigate how these resources are integrated, and what influence the integration. Thus, this study uses the enhanced antecedents-privacy concerns-outcomes model. This model includes different levels of cognitive effort that influence private resource integration. Then, we conducted interviews with Tesla owners in Australia. Tesla owners gave high-level cognitive responses and attitudes, including environmental concerns, altruism, attitudes towards electric vehicles and privacy concerns. They also gave low-level cognitive responsesor biases, such as implicit trust and positivity. Specifically, our findings indicate that users distrust vehicle manufacturers; environmental concerns lead to perceived benefits; altruism, implicit trust and positivity mitigate privacy concerns; and privacy concerns increase the perceived privacy risks. These behavioural responses influence resource integration, feeding into our proposed model.

Riding a bicycle is a great manner to contribute to the preservation of our ecosystem. Cycling helps to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, and so, it is one of the simplest ways to lower the environmental footprint of people. However, the cohabitation of cars and vulnerable road users, such as bikes, scooters, or pedestrians, is prone to cause accidents with serious consequences. In this context, technological solutions are sought that enable the generation of alerts to prevent these accidents, thereby promoting a safer city for these road users, and a cleaner environment. Alert systems based on smartphones can alleviate these situations since nearly all people carry such a device while traveling. In this work, we test the suitability of a smartphone based alert system, determining the most adequate communications architecture. Two protocols have been designed to send position and alert messages to/from a centralized server over 4G cellular networks. One of the protocols is implemented using a REST architecture on top of the HTTP protocol, and the other one is implemented over the UDP protocol. We show that the proposed alarm system is feasible regarding communication response time, and we conclude that the application should be implemented over the UDP protocol, as response times are about three times better than for the REST implementation. We tested the applications in real deployments, finding that drivers are warned of the presence of bicycles when closer than 150 m, having enough time to pay attention to the situation and drive more carefully to avoid a collision.
