“…The aim of this paper is to describe the features of this network model in comparison with the central place model as well as to assess whether this network model describes the spatial pattern in polycentric urban regions better than the central place model, at least for some of its features. As central place theory, in particular Christaller's approach, gradually developed into a descriptive and theoretical base of the geography of retail and consumer services (Von Böventer 1963; Berry et al . 1988), we will focus in our elaboration on consumer‐oriented services as well: hospitals and universities of professional education in the Netherlands.…”

“…20.7. This might be the reason why it is often argued that Christaller went "top down" in his analysis, while Lösch went "bottom up" (see von Böventer 1963). However, they both start their theoretical development from the smallest settlements while finding the existence of a major central place to be crucial for the resulting overall structures.…”

“…That he does not take into account the obviously uneven distribution of natural resources, renders his theory less relevant and applicable, at least at first sight. Authors such as von Böventer (1963) point out, though, that many of von Thünen's results remain true, albeit possibly in modified form, if this assumption is dropped.…”

“…that size. 3 The classes are arranged in a hierarchy such that central places of high-order classes perform all the functions of lower-order centres plus a group of functions distinguishing them from the lower-order centres. Consequently all distances between neighbouring places on the same hierarchical level are constant, as they have equal-sized market areas for their highest-order goods with the same number of consumers located in those market areas.…”
