Towards a Theoretical Framework for HBIM Approach in Historic Preservation and Management

Abstract: In the context of rapid technology development, the theory of using building information modelling (BIM) has been used in several historic places. With BIM technology, an accurate virtual model of a historic building is digitally constructed in order to maintain the building through its entire lifecycle, including demolition. This model, known as historic building information modelling (HBIM), represents a new paradigm within architectural heritage that can be used for creating, conserving, documenting, and ma… Show more

“…In a review article, [19] proposes a data collection framework for HBIM, for the scope of social domain, technology, processes, and regulation. Authors [20] set cultural heritage in the context of wide range of intangible and tangible significances of cultural heritage assets for assessing their resilience. There is a further development of disciplines so that social BIM and social HBIM terms are proposed as an addition to the technical information set for modelling [14,22].…”

“…In the last decade, many traditional surveying methods have been used to rec-ord and represent such buildings [5]. Conservation of built heritage is progressively linked to the regular maintenance of buildings, defining the heritage building management as a real necessity.…”

“…Acknowledging the progressive increase in demand for use of BIM in historic buildings Megahed (2015) notes that BIM can present an accurate virtual model of a historic building in order to maintain the building through its entire lifecycle, including demolition. This approach, known as HBIM, represents a new paradigm within architectural heritage; the remit of which can be used for creating, conserving, documenting, and managing complete engineering drawings and information.…”
