The contemporary marketplace for cultural products, such as music, fashion and film, features an abundance of goods, services and experiences. While producers struggle to differentiate and monetize their offerings, some consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of choice and information available to them. As a result, many consumers are turning to a range of intermediaries who help them make sense of the marketplace. While intermediation is nothing new, its value is increasing and there has been a shift in relative importance from those who create products to those who curate products. As curation remains a 'fuzzy concept' -with definitions and connotations that vary by industry and occupation -this paper aims to contribute to existing conceptualizations by focusing on the case of recorded music. Based on interviews and observation with a subset of curators, including record shops and music writers, the paper provides a typology of curation-related activities and highlights the range of economic and non-economic rewards that motivate different actors to perform curation. It also interrogates the importance and role of space by identifying physical, temporary and virtual spaces where curation is performed and relationships between specific spatial dynamics and curation-related processes.

Creative group work can be supported by collaborative search and annotation of Web resources. In this setting, it is important to help individuals both stay fluent in generating ideas of what to search next (i.e., maintain ideational fluency) and stay consistent in annotating resources (i.e., maintain organization). Based on a model of human memory, we hypothesize that sharing search results with other users, such as through bookmarks and social tags, prompts search processes in memory, which increase ideational fluency, but decrease the consistency of annotations, e.g., the reuse of tags for topically similar resources. To balance this tradeoff, we suggest the tag recommender SoMe, which is designed to simulate search of memory from user-specific tag-topic associations. An experimental field study (N = 18) in a workplace context finds evidence of the expected tradeoff and an advantage of SoMe over a conventional recommender in the collaborative setting. We conclude that sharing search results supports group creativity by increasing the ideational fluency, and that SoMe helps balancing the evidenced fluency-consistency tradeoff.

Os Sistemas de Recomendação (RS) são definidos como algoritmos que classificam e recomendam produtos culturais a partir de dados sobre as práticas e o comportamento dos usuários. O objetivo deste artigo é diagnosticar as consequências sociais e culturais dos algoritmos de recomendação de música como intermediários culturais on-line, examinando como e até que ponto eles afetam a percepção cultural, a classificação da música, a formação do gosto, o comportamento do ouvinte e a escolhas dos usuários. Realizamos uma revisão sistemática da literatura para identificar e discutir a produção científica sobre as implicações sociais e culturais de tais algoritmos nas práticas de consumo de música. Foram obtidos 311 artigos a partir de pesquisas bibliográficas em nove diferentes bases de dados científicos. Nossa análise crítica indicou quatro abordagens temáticas principais exploradas pela comunidade científica sobre esse tema entre 2000 e 2016: 1) O papel dos sistemas de recomendação na indústria fonográfica; 2) Impacto dos serviços de streaming no download de música; 3) Viés na classificação e recomendação de conteúdo; e 4) Consumo de música como recurso social. Os resultados revelam a lógica da intermediação cultural via sistemas de recomendação no mercado da música: esses algoritmos influenciam, modelam e mapeiam os gostos e hábitos dos usuários em um ambiente aparentemente livre, diversificado e ao mesmo tempo personalizado.
