Towards a synthetic view of potato cold and salt stress response by transcriptomic and proteomic analyses

Abstract: Potato can suffer from several abiotic stresses such as cold temperature, high soil salinity, lack of water or heavy metal exposure, to name a few. They are known to affect plant growth as well as productivity, with differential regulations at several levels. Potato response to cold and salt exposure was investigated at both transcriptomic and proteomic levels in a growth chamber experiment. Cold exposure in potato resulted in a higher number of significantly differentially regulated genes compared to salt exp… Show more

“…However, several studies have shown that changes in mRNA transcript levels do not automatically imply corresponding changes in protein amount or activity [14,15]. A proteomic approach complements the genomic and transcriptomic data by looking at the actual protein population of a specific tissue, cell or cellular compartment.…”

“…Several proteome studies have mainly been executed on tuber tissue [2022] and in connection with phytopathogens [2325]. Other studies on protein changes related to abiotic stress tolerance in potato have also been implemented until now [15,26]. …”

“…Functional analyses of the result showed repression of carbohydrate anabolism and photosynthesis whereas carbohydrate catabolism was upregulated along with some proteins involved in jasmonic acid biosynthesis pathway, stress, defense and secondary metabolism [11]. [12] analyzed the effect of salt and cold stresses on the leaf transcriptome and proteome of potato which shows a large number of differentially regulated genes and proteins. It was observed that when the plant was subjected to salt stress a large number of genes associated with primary metabolism, signal transduction and detoxification apparatus were down regulated whereas when the plant was exposed to cold stress the number of genes showing up-regulation and down regulation was equal.…”
