In recent years, business process modeling has increasingly drawn the attention of enterprises. As a result of the wide use of business processes, redundancy problems have arisen and researchers introduced the variability management, in order to enhance the business process reuse. The most approach used in this context is the Configurable Process Model solution, which consists in representing the variable and the fixed parts together in a unique model. Due to the increasing number of variants, the configurable models become complex and incomprehensible, and their quality is therefore impacted. Most of research work is limited to the syntactic quality of process variants. The approach presented in this paper aims at providing a novel method towards syntactic verification and semantic validation of configurable process models based on ontology languages. We define validation rules for assessing the quality of configurable process models. An example in the e-healthcare domain illustrates the main steps of our approach.

Managing process variability enable the process model adaptability according changes in the application environment. In the healthcare area, flexibility is essential to provide a quality treatment because, even patients with the same diagnostic, may follow different paths and suffer different proceedings. Besides, there are many aspects to be considered for the selection of a path, as patient's symptoms, and clinical guidelines, among others. In this context, this research presents a framework for the management of the process variants through semantic reasoning. The enrichment of the business process with semantics enables the automation of the configuration, thus promoting more flexible and adaptive solutions. The proposed framework helps selecting the appropriate process variant according the patient's symptoms by reasoning on ontologies based known expertise. In our specific use case, we will use the expertise of the Brazilian guideline for acute ischemic stroke.

When dealing with processes, engineering systems need to be able to deal with the existence of many versions of the same process, known as variants. Each process variant aims to represent a specific business context but, due to some differences in the activities, resources, and control flow, they may differ in their logic. As result, the concept of a customizable process model has emerged. A process model can be customized by representing the process family in one single model deriving a variant through transformations in this single model. However, the process customization is not a trivial‐task. It must be ensured that the variant is correct. Besides, the resulting variant must respect all requirements related to the application context and internal and external regulations, among others. In addition, recommendations and guidance should be provided during the customization. In this context, this research aims to propose a framework for customizing variants according to the user's requirements. The customization is achieved by reasoning in an ontology based on the rules for selecting a variant, in the internal/external regulations, and on expert knowledge.
