Towards a Privacy-Preserving Way of Vehicle Data Sharing – A Case for Blockchain Technology?

Abstract: Vehicle data is a valuable source for digital services, especially with a rising degree of driving automatization. Despite regulation on data protection has become stricter due to Europe's GDPR we argue that the exchange of vehicle and driving data will massively increase. We therefore raise the question on what would be a privacy-preserving way of vehicle data exploitation? Blockchain technology could be an enabler, as it is associated with privacy-friendly concepts including transparency, trust, and decentra… Show more

“…Secure data privacy models, transparency of data exchange, and control of third-party access are important solutions for exploiting data while at the same time complying with privacy laws [74,75]. Fog computing, homomorphic encryption, and blockchain technology have been suggested as solutions for enabling the use of the collected data while preserving privacy [76][77][78].…”

“…As an outlook, it should be mentioned that digital vehicle services and the required technological infrastructure to facilitate data acquisition, preprocessing, analysis and storage, are currently a hot topic in the automotive domain. There are already initial ideas using blockchain technology and brokers to make data sharing transparent and secure, as described in Kaiser et. al (2018a).…”

“…In addition, the Internet of Things employs sensors to connect vehicles to the Internet. Thus it helps to detect the drivers' diversion, tiredness, vehicle safety, and security problems solved through cloud technology but not wholly [124]. Moreover, the automotive industry is moving towards digitalization.…”
