Towards a new wave in internationalization of innovation? The rise of China's innovative MNEs, strategic coupling, and global economic organization

Abstract: This paper examines the changes in the internationalisation of innovation created by the recent surge of Chinese innovative firms and the resultant effects on global economic organisation.Drawing insights from the international business, economic geography and development studies literatures, it investigates the rise and internationalisation of Chinese innovative firms from the perspective of strategic coupling, decoupling and recoupling. This novel approach provides a first glimpse into the potential impact o… Show more

“…While R&D FDIs from advanced economies towards EDCs have attracted a relatively large number of studies, the role of EMNEs in the internationalization of R&D has received a lower albeit growing attention in some recent works (Minin, Zhang & Gammeltoft, 2012). He et al, (2017) confirm the disruptive nature of leading EMNEs in the global innovation scene. compare R&D strategies of AMNEs and EMNEs in the wind power industry and conclude that asset-exploitation and assetaugmenting arguments apply in both cases.…”

“…CSR China, for example, took advantage of technological transfers from leading global players and successfully combined them with in-house innovation efforts. This allowed it to design, engineer and produce EMUs that ran at speeds of 350 km/ hour, as noted above (He et al, 2017).…”

“…The argument that EMNEs’ internationalization is driven by the desire to exploit home country-based CSAs (see Table I) should not, indeed be taken to equate with the view that they lack FSAs. Many Chinese MNEs have, for example, become increasingly prominent players in global markets, despite the fierce competition that they face from their domestic and foreign rivals (Mathews, 2006) and strategic coupling with lead firms in global production networks (He et al , 2017). Moreover, it is difficult to defend the view that EMNEs enjoy unique access to particular CSAs.…”

“…This section, therefore, would focus on measuring the global competitiveness of Chinese electronics MNEs' key players (He et al, 2017;M. W. Peng, 2012)-Huawei, Lenovo, and Haier-through the use of three models of assessment (Arregle et al, 2018;Fu et al, 2018;Li et al, 2018).…”
