Towards a natural classification of Dothideomycetes: The genera Dermatodothella, Dothideopsella, Grandigallia, Hysteropeltella and Gloeodiscus (Dothideomycetes incertae sedis)

Abstract: One-hundred and sixteen genera are listed as incertae sedis in the class Dothideomycetes. This is a first of a series of papers in which we re-examine the herbarium types of these genera, which are generally poorly known. By examining the generic types we can suggest higher level placements, but more importantly we illustrate the taxa so that they are better understood. In this way the taxa can be recollected, sequenced and placed in a natural taxonomic framework in the Ascomycota. In this study we re-examined… Show more

“…We have been studying the genera of Dothideomycetes (Ariyawansa et al 2013a,b,c, Boonmee et al 2011, Liu et al 2012, Wu et al 2011, Zhang et al 2012, especially Dothideomycetes incertae sedis to provide a natural classification of this large class (Ariyawansa et al 2013b, Thambugala et al 2014. The aim of the present study, the second paper in this series ( (Ariyawansa et al 2013b), is to re-visit the generic types of genera that have been categorized in Dothideomycetes incertae sedis and are poorly understood.…”

“…The basic methodology used in this study was the same as Ariyawansa et al (2013b). Type specimens were borrowed from BPI, FH, S, URM and W. Ascomata were rehydrated in water and 5% KOH prior to examination and sectioning.…”

“…In the present study, and also in Ariyawansa et al (2013a), we re-examined generic types of five genera which previously had been placed in Dothideomycetes genera, incertae sedis by Lumbsch & Huhndorf (2010). Dolabra, Placostromella, Pleosphaerellula, Polysporidiella and Pseudotrichia were re-examined and redescribed from their type specimens.…”

“…Some fungi develop sexual spores during their life cycles, but for others, the sexual stage is unknown (1). The Dothideomycetes are a large and ecologically diverse class of fungi and contain both sexual and asexual species (2).…”
