Towards a GNU/Linux IEEE 802.21 Implementation

Abstract: Abstract-Multiaccess mobile devices and overlapping wireless network deployments have emerged as a next generation network fixture. To make the most of all available networks, mobile devices should be capable of handing over between heterogeneous networks seamlessly and automatically. At the same time, operators should be able to steer network attachment based on their criteria. Although several cross layer mechanisms have been proposed in recent years, only the Media Independent Handover (MIH) Services framew… Show more

“…Furthermore, as support for multiple wireless technologies is an attractive feature in today's heterogeneous network infrastructures, a solution based on the recently published IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover (MIH) standard is under investigation. We recently introduced an IEEE 802.21 prototype, building upon MIH services beyond mere handover preparation functionalities [22]. We plan to continue enhancing the prototype towards a more general framework in which WiMAX networks could also be included.…”

“…To our knowledge, there is no reference implementation of the IEEE 802.21 standard. Nevertheless, FP6/FP7 IST projects have contributed to a prototype on GNU/Linux [7]. Another prototype proposes an implementation of a mobile VoIP using SCTP with automatic address reconfiguration [8].…”

“…The MIH standard offers an effective way to manage handovers between heterogeneous link layer technologies. Open source implementations and simulation models are now available for most wireless technologies. MIH solutions have also been proposed for DVB and HSTN systems .…”
