Towards a global monitoring system for CMS computing operations

Abstract: Abstract. The operation of the CMS computing system requires a complex monitoring system to cover all its aspects: central services, databases, the distributed computing infrastructure, production and analysis workflows, the global overview of the CMS computing activities and the related historical information. Several tools are available to provide this information, developed both inside and outside of the collaboration and often used in common with other experiments. Despite the fact that the current monitor… Show more

“…These can be found on each individual worker node as light weight software layers, as well as on dedicated, heavy weight, externally facing machines for site-to-site transfers, which are known as external gateways. Supported specifically for the CMS experiment is the AAA service, which stands for Any data, Any time, Any where [7,8] and must also run a gateway. Figure 1 illustrates these examples schematically, including interfaces between XRootD and libradosstriper.…”

“…In CMS it is important for monitoring disk space usage at Tier2 sites, which provide storage for user data not registered in the central data catalogs. Requirements and motivation for a common space monitoring tool based on storage dumps have been streamlined by the conclusions of the CMS Monitoring Task Force presented in [18].…”
