Towards a Digital Approach to the Listening to Ancient Places

Abstract: This paper aims to investigate digital heritage and acoustical techniques for exploring sonic heritage of archaeological sites and performative spaces. Through the analysis of case studies in Greece and in Italy, this paper intends to highlight a new approach to the development of the relationship between space, sound, and environment and a novel method in deciphering the sonic heritage of ancient spaces thanks to digital technology.

“…Enhanced listening and communication skills are also considered to be highly effective by both auditors and management in eliminating communication barriers. These findings corroborate the conclusions of Arpa (2014), Baldacchino (1992), Bellia (2021), Farrugia (2016, Golen et al (1996), Lunenburg (2010), and Siriwardane and Durden (2014), who all highlight that simple communication and/or listening skills will substantially improve communication. These results may suggest that as the years go by, adequate listening and communication skills will always help in eliminating communication barriers.…”

“…The user's involvement in virtual environments is created by the immediacy provided by the VR hardware used, where no other medium is visible between the user and the visible virtual world, while multimodal interaction involving visual and tactile feedback ensures the feeling of immersion [17]. Multimodality also includes sound that is inextricably linked to place and space, mind and body, cultural context, and emotion as a means of knowledge and experiential involvement [18,19]. Furthermore, depending on the way the VR device is tracked in space, six or three degrees of freedom (DoF) can be provided to interact with the virtual environment [20].…”
