Towards a database on societal impact of Mediterranean floods within the framework of the HYMEX project

Abstract: Abstract. The NW Mediterranean region experiences every year heavy rainfall and flash floods that occasionally produce catastrophic damages. Less frequent are floods that affect large regions. Although a large number of databases devoted exclusively to floods or considering all kind of natural hazards do exist, usually they only record catastrophic flood events. This paper deals with the new flood database that is being developed within the framework of HYMEX project. Results are focused on four regions repres… Show more

“…In the early 1990s a comprehensive re-evaluation of the HBV model routines was carried out (Lindstrom et al, 1997), which resulted in the HBV-96 version. In this study the WFLOW-HBV model is used for modelling the Genoa flash flood.…”

“…The resulting flash floods can lead to economic damage and even fatalities (see Llasat et al, 2013 for a list of such events over the northwestern Mediterranean). Clearly these high-impact weather events need to be accurately forecast, leading to the development of dedicated international research projects.…”

“…However, information on the type of damage is still lacking. At the European scale, the HyMeX project has led to the creation of a database recording the societal impact of Mediterranean floods (Llasat et al, 2013). This database has gathered 385 flood events which occurred between 1981 and 2010.…”
