Towards a data‐driven approach to scenario generation for serious games

Abstract: Serious games have recently shown great potential to be adopted in many applications, such as training and education. However, one critical challenge in developing serious games is the authoring of a large set of scenarios for different training objectives. In this paper, we propose a data‐driven approach to automatically generate scenarios for serious games. Compared with other scenario generation methods, our approach leverages on the simulated player performance data to construct the scenario evaluation fun… Show more

“…Recently, there has been an emerging trend to apply interactive narrative technologies to training. 3,18,23,24,60,6162 In fact, it has been observed by stakeholders and government agencies that there is a need to provide a more intuitive and interactive way to train or educate personnel in relevant skill sets. Interactive narrative systems and technologies have shown great potential to facilitate such interactive training and education.…”

“…The simulation of agent behavior in emergency scenarios usually focuses on movement only [21][22][23][24][25]. GAs have also been utilized for scenario generation [4,6,[26][27][28] where they have been used to search for scenarios that maximize a set of evaluation criterion. However, in these approaches, scenario generation occurs in an offline manner.…”

“…Serious games with highly realistic scenes have been used as adjuvant psychological therapy, fire escape training and military training [4] [5]. For example, Padgett et al [6] developed a virtual reality computer game to teach fire safety skills to children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome.…”
