Towards a Critical Realist Comparative Methodology: Context-Sensitive Theoretical Comparison

Abstract: This article provides a critical realist take on comparative methodology. Heeding the call for greater attention to the ontological presuppositions inherent in all methods, it fi rst outlines comparative methods as they have traditionally been conceived and practised. Discerning two important aspects of these approaches -their notion of causality and their reliance on inductive inferences -the discussion moves on to consider their applicability within a critical realist social science. Arguing that the ontolog… Show more

“…We also conducted cross-case analyses aimed at making analytical generalisation (Yin, 2003) or explanation-building generalisation (Bergene, 2007;Yin, 2003). Our aim was to expand the theoretical understandings of the phenomenon, rather than to generalise correlations between outcomes and factors of influence to a larger population of cases.…”

“…Following Bergene [10], the empirical data were analysed in two phases. In the first phase, the analysis was concerned with the understanding of the context and pre-existing conditions of the digitalisation phenomenon.…”

“…Because the relationship between a causal power and its effects are external and contingent , explanation requires that generative mechanisms be studied in their context; therefore, decontextualizing relationships through the analysis of variables (as positivists do) makes little sense to a critical realist (Bergene, , p. 13). In addition, because social structures do not exist independently of the actions they condition or independently of the actors’ conceptions of what they are doing, and they are only relatively enduring, we have to abandon all efforts to suggest causality operates in constant conjunctions (Porter, , p. 62).…”
