Towards a Combined Use of Geophysics and Remote Sensing Techniques for the Characterization of a Singular Building: “El Torreón” (the Tower) at Ulaca Oppidum (Solosancho, Ávila, Spain)

Abstract: This research focuses on the study of the ruins of a large building known as “El Torreón” (the Tower), belonging to the Ulaca oppidum (Solosancho, Province of Ávila, Spain). Different remote sensing and geophysical approaches have been used to fulfil this objective, providing a better understanding of the building’s functionality in this town, which belongs to the Late Iron Age (ca. 300–50 BCE). In this sense, the outer limits of the ruins have been identified using photogrammetry and convergent drone flights.… Show more

“…Once the visitor reaches the highest part of the hill, it is possible to contemplate a landscape dominated by granite rocky areas, among which a series of stone structures erected by the ancient inhabitants of Ulaca are scattered (Figure 4). Among them, the following stand out: (a) the gates built in its more than 3 km of walls [56]; (b) the sanctuary, with its famous rock altar oriented towards the highest peaks of the mountain range "Sierra de la Paramera" [57]; (c) a ritual sauna semi-excavated in the rock [58]; (d) a couple of excavated and restored houses [52]; (e) impressive granite quarries [59]; and (f) a ruined building of great proportions, known as "El Torreón" (the Tower) [60,61], built with large granite blocks that differentiate it from the more than 250 common constructions that can be seen scattered around different parts of the oppidum. In addition, the archaeological excavations carried out at the site in the last two decades have yielded the location on the northern slope of the hill of a necropolis and an area of artisan workshops, although these elements are not open to visitors for now [62][63][64].…”
