Towards a classification of branes in theories with eight supercharges

Abstract: Abstract:We provide a classification of half-supersymmetric branes in quarter-maximal supergravity theories with scalars parametrising coset manifolds. We show that the results previously obtained for the half-maximal theories give evidence that half-supersymmetric branes correspond to the real longest weights of the representations of the brane charges, where the reality properties of the weights are determined from the Tits-Satake diagrams associated to the global symmetry groups. We show that the resulting … Show more

“…In a series of papers, the full classification of 1/2-BPS branes in type-II string theory compactified on a torus was achieved by analysing the supersymmetry of the corresponding brane effective action [39][40][41]44], while the connection of this analysis with specific group theory properties of such branes was shown in [42,43]. This classification was also extended to theories with less supersymmetry in [64][65][66][67]. In the following, we will first review the basic results of this classification and we will then derive a universal T-duality transformation rule for any brane in string theory, which will give in particular the IIA branes that are related by duality to the S-dual of the D7-brane in our model, together with additional branes in IIB that must be included for consistency.…”

“…In the case of non-split groups, one has actually to impose the additional requirement that the long weight is real, where the reality properties are defined by the Tits-Satake procedure[29].…”

“…Half-supersymmetric branes are solutions preserving the maximum amount of supersymmetry and they serve also as building blocks for less supersymmetric solutions. It has been found [26,28] play a prominent role also in the classification of U-duality orbits [26,28,29]. It should be remarked that the length in this case is computed with respect to the U-duality algebra and thus it does not correspond in general to the length in E 11 .…”

“…Vector GL(2, R) rep Dynkin labels Looking in perspective to brane solutions in maximal supergravity the analysis of differential forms is crucial since a p-brane is charged with respect to (p + 1)-forms. This link induces an algebraic characterization for the 1/2-BPS solutions [26,28]. Half-supersymmetric branes are solutions preserving the maximum amount of supersymmetry and they serve also as building blocks for less supersymmetric solutions.…”
