“…Even if Mr. Berlusconi can’t be considered representative of the typical Italian leadership styles, undoubtedly he keeps being elected to office by a large segment of the Italian population despite his sometimes questionable behaviour – for example, since 1994 he has been tried repeatedly in Italian courts or involved in many scandals – and, most importantly, despite several concerns regarding his idea and exercise of political leadership and power. These concerns are related to the control he is able to exert over the media, his numerous conflicts of interest, the extensive use made by the Berlusconi Government of the so-called ‘decree laws’, which do not require the prior authorization of Parliament, and vote of confidence, which puts the government’s future survival on the line and discourages dissenting groups within the majority to vote against the government (Hibberd, 2007; Hopkin, 2005; Sartori, 2009; Vassallo, 2007).…”
