Farming is essential work, but it suffers from very high injury and fatality rates. Machinery, including tractors, are a leading cause of serious injuries and fatalities to farmers and farm workers in many countries. Herein, we document the systematic development of an evidence-based, theory-informed behaviour change intervention to increase machine-related safety on farms. Intervention development progressed through four phases. Phase 1 defined the problem in behavioural terms based a review of the literature, Phase 2 identified candidate intervention targets through a series of focus groups guided by the Capability–Opportunity–Motivation–Behaviour (COM-B) model and Phase 3 employed expert and stakeholder consultation guided by the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) to consider potential target behaviours and intervention components and finalise the intervention content. Phase 4 finalised the evaluation strategies with a team of agricultural advisors who supported the rollout and identified outcome measures for the first trial. The target intervention was the identification of blind spots of farm tractors, and three priority target behaviours (farm safety practices) were identified. Following Phase 3, the intervention comprised four components that are delivered in a group-based, face-to-face session with farmers. In Phase 4, the acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity of these components were identified as the outcome measures for the first trial of the intervention. The four-phase systematic method detailed here constitutes an initial template for developing theory-based, stakeholder-driven, behaviour-change-based interventions targeting farmers and reporting such developments.

Farming in IrelandIreland currently has 130,216 farms with 276,000 persons employed, 73% of whom are male (4). Farming is the sole occupation of 53% of farm holders while average farm size is 32.4 hectares (80.1 acres). The average age of farm holders is 57.2 years with dairy farmers having a younger average age (52 years). Farmer age structure is skewed, with just 7.4% being aged under 35 years and 32.9% aged 65 years and over. Farm enterprise distribution varies throughout the country (5), with, beef (74.2 k), dairy (15.3 k), sheep (17.4 k) and tillage (4.6 k) along with mixed enterprises and "other" including equine, horticulture, pigs and poultry (15.0 k) being the main enterprises (4).Farm incomes in Ireland are monitored by the National Farm Survey conducted by Teagasc (6). In 2020, average farm income was highest for dairying (e74.2 k), followed by tillage (e32.1 k), sheep (e17.9 k), beef production (e15.0 k); beef rearing (e9.1 k).

The process of modernizing agriculture has resulted in the replacement of manual labor with machines. The mechanization of this sector, despite favoring increased production and efficiency, has led to consequences with environmental and social impacts. From a social perspective, the effects on the health and quality of life of workers stand out, as studies indicate that exposure to agricultural machinery can contribute to poorer health conditions for workers in this sector. Therefore, this present study aimed to investigate ergonomic factors related to the discomfort of agricultural machinery operators in the municipality of Dom Pedrito – RS. To achieve this, 75 tractor and combine operators from different rural properties in the municipality were interviewed using a set of open and closed-ended questions. The data were tabulated and analyzed through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Frequency Analysis (FA). The research revealed that agricultural machinery has a significant impact on the health and comfort of workers during and after their work shifts.
