His observations on the Muslim community, however, were more a reflection of the opinion of the European community at the Cape and of his own preconceived notions than of his objectivity. Some of his observations show how much of South African life has remained unchanged to the present day. The Coloured farm laborers were, then as now, paid partly in wine with the result, then as now, of excessive drinking and poverty. The Boers did not want a service of worship to be held for the laborers on the farm unless there first had been a service for themselves. The Griqua chief, Adam Kok II, was insulted on the streets of Cape Town because he was a Hottentot. Yet, "the chief and his train make quite a respectable appearance far more so than many white men in Cape Town" (p. 21). Again, "the Malays and Mahometans . . . consider themselves a grade above the others" (p. 28). At one point, however, circumstances have changed since Champion's days: he observed how integration, to use a modern term, was working in the Cape Town schools. Champion was very impressed by the variety of agricultural and practical teaching given at the Moravian mission station Gnadendal, but he makes a very cogent remark:The Hottentot may have his thatched cottage, his garden, and his pig, and that is all, he is not led to think that he can be anything, or accomplish anything. There are exceptions, but the principle leads to this, and hence the Hottentot rises not in the scale of existence, and the mission seems to be raising itself into notice rather than holding forth motives to the people to exert themselves (pp. 17-18).Here Champion points out a difficulty which has beset so many European and American religious and secular efforts to help the African people, a difficulty which has not yet been entirely overcome.Yet, one wonders if the New England Puritan is not here standing in judgment on the German Pietist?Dr. Booth's admirable notes contain one mistake.On page 42 Champion describes the relief he and his companions felt in reaching Port Natal after a difficult and unpleasant voyage from Port Elizabeth by saying, "Here we erected another Ebenezer."In the religious language of the day this was a reference to 1 .Sam. 7, 12, and meant, here we erect another stone in gratitude for God's help.
