The concept of cultural evolution was fundamental to the foundation of academic musicology and the subfield of comparative musicology, but largely disappeared from discussion after World War II despite a recent resurgence of interest in cultural evolution in other fields. I draw on recent advances in the scientific understanding of cultural evolution to clarify persistent misconceptions about the roles of genes and progress in musical evolution, and review literature relevant to musical evolution ranging from macroevolution of global songstyle to microevolution of tune families. I also address criticisms regarding issues of musical agency, meaning, and reductionism, and highlight potential applications including music education and copyright. While cultural evolution will never explain all aspects of music, it offers a useful theoretical framework for understanding diversity and change in the world's music.

Abstract. Urban ethnomusicology is a branch of ethnomusicology; its research perspective focuses on the urban sound landscape and pays attention to the music culture phenomena in the surroundings. The street Chu opera performance of Xiaogan is the urban sound landscape. It is of practical significance to inherit and carry forward the Chu opera through placing the street Chu operaperformance in Xiaogan into the perspective of urban ethnomusicology and illustrating this urban cultural symbol.

Taiwan est un pays en voie d'émancipation. Longtemps colonisé par une succession d'occupants, il n'a commencé que récemment à se questionner sur l'idée d'une conscience nationale. La pratique du metal s'est d'abord développée à Taiwan au sein des structures où le rock importé par les militaires américains s'était implanté dans les années 1950 (médias, lieux de concerts). Plus récemment, Internet a joué un rôle important, notamment pour le black metal, style pratiqué majoritairement par des étudiants. On peut dire que la vague black metal a révolutionné le milieu du rock taiwanais. Chthonic, principal représentant du style, est en efet devenu en quelque sorte le symbole d'une « identité nationale » pour de nombreux jeunes. Alors que le groupe introduit des références à la culture taiwanaise dans ses oeuvres, le leader de cette formation, politiquement impliqué, se bat pour l'indépendance de Taiwan vis-à-vis de la Chine. Il semble ainsi que le black metal local taiwanais apparaisse à la fois comme un exotisme musical et comme un vecteur assumé du nationalisme de ce pays. Nous nous proposons de prendre pour cas d'étude le phénomène black metal à Taiwan, qui montre que la localité chez les groupes de ce pays ne s'incarne pas seulement comme un exotisme au sein de la scène mondiale du black metal, mais relète aussi, et positivement, la situation particulière de l'identité nationale de Taiwan. Le black metal, un sous-genre né du fameux album Black Metal de Venom (1982), se déinit originellement par une esthétique sombre et un esprit misanthropique, véhiculant des images telles qu'un intérêt pour la notion de destruction, une dévotion à Satan et une idéologie politique radicale. En puisant ses racines dans le death metal et le thrash metal, ce genre s'avère extrêmement violent et quelquefois grossier. Il s'est notamment fait connaître au gré d'une série d'épisodes criminels au sein de la scène black metal norvégienne au début des années 1990 (Moynihan & Søderlind, 1998 1). Dès le milieu des années 1990, une nouvelle vague de black metal appelée « symphonic black metal » se développe. Celle-ci se caractérise par ses emprunts à la musique classique et par une richesse sonore qui s'appuie notamment sur des arrangements aux synthétiseurs. Pour les groupes de symphonic black metal, les thèmes de prédilection de l'ancienne génération du black metal servent dorénavant de prétextes esthétiques aux oeuvres mais ne s'incarnent plus dans l'ethos de la vie.
