Toward the development of a play performance scale for children (PPSC)

Abstract: Performance scales (i.e., Karnofsky), as they measure quality of life, have been used effectively as an integral part of repeated assessment of adult cancer patients for the last several years. An equally concise measure of performance has not been developed for children. The task of developing a scale to assess performance in infants, toddlers, school-age children, and adolescents is formidable, as the activity measured should be of equal merit at each age level. Although all childhood cancer patients could b… Show more

“…One group of researchers, Lansky and associates (L. L. Lansky, List, Lansky, Cohen, & Sinks, 1985), made one of the first attempts to measure quality of life in children by involving a parent-rated instrument measuring play in children (Eiser & Morse, 2001). Lansky et al (1985) believed that play is "the work of children," and therefore, an instrument measuring play would be a reflection of a child's performance status.…”

“…Lansky et al (1985) believed that play is "the work of children," and therefore, an instrument measuring play would be a reflection of a child's performance status. In addition, a child's ability to engage in age-appropriate play influences not only peer contacts, skill acquisition, and more general feelings of self-esteem but in essence is a major part of overall quality of life (L. L. Lansky et al, 1985). The play-performance scale was tested on 98 pediatric oncology patients, 29 of their siblings, and 40 healthy children of hospital employees ranging ages 1 to 16 years (S. B. “…Awareness of psychologic, social, and physical impairments can guide care in returning children to their preadmission state-a worthy goal from both an individual and a public health perspective (7,8). Early assessment of health status and long-term outcomes other than mortality in children focused on premature infants and children with chronic diseases (9)(10)(11). Impairments in physical, psychologic, and social behavior demonstrated the importance of function and health in evaluating medical treatment (9)(10)(11).…”
