“…The estimation result shows that SOEs are more likely to receive the innovation subsidies. This result is consistent with what other researchers found (König et al, 2018;Tan et al, 2016;Herrala and Jia, 2015;Ferri and Liu, 2010). When the controls are added (Models 2 and 3), however, the coefficient estimate on the SOE dummy becomes substantially smaller and loses statistical significance.…”

“…Unfortunately, since 2008, financial repression, particularly credit misallocation has been pushed by the party-state to an unprecedented level. Private enterprises have been further driven out of credit markets (Herrala and Jia 2015;Johansson and Feng 2016;Cong and Ponticelli 2017). Huang (2011) estimates that 90 per cent of the stimulus funds have been directed towards SOEs.…”

“…These are companies that function in a similar manner to Western companies but they are owned and controlled by the state. Particularly during Hu Jintao's administration (2003-13), China's economic policy increasingly favored state-owned firms (Herrala & Jia, 2015). Instead of profits being equally distributed among the population, they are retained by the SOEs and used to maximize profit.…”
