Toward reliable operative assessment: the reliability and feasibility of videotaped assessment of laparoscopic technical skills

Abstract: The use of videotapes of operations enabled multiple raters to assess a performance reliably and shortened assessment times by 80%. This assessment technique shows potential as a means of evaluating the performance of advanced laparoscopic procedures by surgical trainees.

“…Video-based assessment tools may add value to detailed review of learner performance. 11,12 No study to date has evaluated the reliability of video compared to live assessment during pediatric rapid sequence intubation (pRSI). 13 We evaluated emergency medicine residents' performance during simulation of critical procedures to determine whether the reviewer actually needed to be present.…”

“…This system needs an instructed examiner during the evaluation procedure, which could be affected by bias due to the nonblinded process. Video assessment methods using GRS such as the Operative Component Rating Scale (OCRS) (17) provide a more objective blinded rating process with the same scoring criteria as live rating systems (8).…”

“…Evaluation was often based on surgical outcomes and the subjective assessment of the attending physician. In recent years, a growing body of research has been aimed at developing a different approach to surgical education, one that uses various simulation models to objectively assess surgical skills [1,2,5,6,8,9,12,18].…”
