Toward Reliable Fog Computing Architecture for Industrial Internet of Things

Abstract: Reliability is essential in industrial networks. In addition, most of the data from nodes of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) are generated in real time. Thus, those data are mainly used for the time-sensitive applications. Furthermore, device failures should be considered when modeling reliable fog computing for IIoT. In this paper, we provide fundamental aspects to model reliable fog computing for IIoT. First, existing models of fog computing are compared. Then, the most feasible communication type to ac… Show more

“…4 With more wearable sensors and other different IoT devices, both the amount of produced data and the complexity of cyber network increase exponentially, and the available bandwidth exhausts rapidly. Network overhead can impede the links between physical devices and fog layers and between the fog and cloud layers, 52 and fog nodes can be out of service due to connection loss or damage, 53 resulting in catastrophic consequences in time-sensitive applications like telemedicine. Since there are no universal standards yet for data transmission in healthcare, potential issues in the interoperability between heterogenous devices and among different applications (such as remote surgeries and remote health monitoring) cannot be ignored in risk analysis.…”
